9A- Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

For the assignment, I tried to focus on people who do not travel around campus that much, which would mean they would not experience the traffic that is created between the New Physics Building and the Reitz Union. After interviewing a different array of consumers including some of my grandmas' neighbors here in Gainesville, I realized that outside of the people that go to the University of Florida, my opportunity is not a need for others.

Inside the Boundary

  • University of Florida students, faculty, and staff who have classes around the area or work in the Reitz Union
  • The need is a solution to clear out the congestion along Museum Road on campus between the Reitz Union and the New Physics Building
  • This need exists because people want to travel easily and efficiently on campus without dealing with the traffic created from cars, trucks and busses having to wait for many pedestrians to cross the street

Outside the Boundary
  • People who do not go to the University of Florida or never find themselves traveling through this part of campus
  • They are not worried about traffic that is created on a road that they do not drive on
  • Why should you worry about congestion stemming from lots of pedestrians crossing the road in an area that you do not go through? For example, I do not have to worry about pedestrians causing traffic in New York City because I have never been there before and if I worried about that I would worry about way too many things

  1. Hey Travis! You make a clear and concise point regarding the opportunity of the congestion that is created by the amount of traffic and pedestrians crossing the street from the Reitz and the Physics Building. After thinking even further, I thought it could possibly effect students who do not reside in Gainesville or on campus because this congestion can cause future problems pertaining to professors. For example, if a professor is coming from the Reitz and going to the Physics Building and they suddenly get hit by a car, then the class can't have a lecture and online students can possibly be effected, too. I do like your idea for this opportunity and would love to see you possibly follow through with it!

  2. Hi, Travis! I'm glad you talked to people other than UF students and even got your grandma's neighbors' opinions. Kinda like my idea, your opportunity focuses on a specific population - but it's a big population. I even have to deal with the traffic on Museum, and it's very annoying. I think the best solution would be to have one main crosswalk going from the Reitz to Physics Building, because right now there are two, which requires more coordination when crossing/driving on the road.

  3. Hey Travis,

I think it is really important that you reached out to people who don't have any affiliation with UF campus. It is very important to know whether or not this group of people have a need for the bridge. If the construction of this bridge would involve any of their tax dollars, I think the construction would need to be reevaluated. If the construction of the bridge is completely covered by UF, then I do not think this group of outsiders needs to be worried about.

  4. Hey Travis, I think you did a great job of explaining the who, what is the need and why the need exists questions. It was a great idea to interview people who go to UF and to interview some people who do not go to UF. Getting outside people is a good way to get explanations and information from the outside looking in. Great Job!
